Food historians describe cobbler as a deep-dish fruit pie with crust, often biscuit dough, on the top and sometimes lining the pan.

This American-born treat was reportedly born during the era of the old west by westward-bound, gold prospecting southern pioneers. Out of necessity, these ingenious pioneers developed a myriad of ways to prepare "traveling" foods such as chili, stews and cobblers using open flames and cast iron kettles.
