Now for a taste of Soulfully Sweet History!

Did you know that the first ever U.S. pecan planting took place in New York in 1772? Early Pecans came in two varieties: hard and thin shell. The hard shell pecan was hardy, but yielded little nutmeat. The thin shell pecan yielded a lot of nutmeat but perished easily. In 1846, a slave from Louisiana solved this dilemma by successfully grafting these two varieties. His plantings won the Best Pecan Exhibited award at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876, making it the first official planting of improved pecans!
